TÜV SÜD has increased its capacities in the testing of consumer products, investing EUR 15 million in a new laboratory building in Garching. In view of the global competition among testing laboratories, this investment is a clear commitment to Germany as a base for TÜV SÜD's testing operations.
The TÜV SÜD Product Service division employs more than 3,500 experts at over 50 locations, supporting the manufacturers, retailers and importers of consumer products, industry products and medical devices in accessing international markets. "Demand for our testing and certification services is rising continuously", says Dirk Eilers, Member of the Board of Management of TÜV SÜD AG, at the official opening of the new laboratory building on 11 April 2013. "Given this, we are investing in systematic expansion of our global infrastructure for the testing of consumer products." "Product testing is characterised by global competition among testing laboratories", he explains. "By investing in the construction of a new laboratory here in Garching, we are demonstrating our clear commitment to Germany and to the Munich region."
Construction of the new testing laboratory in Garching became necessary as the current premises in Munich did not permit the required expansion of testing capacities. "Our new product testing laboratory will further improve our capacities in the testing of consumer products", says Dr Jens Butenandt, CEO of TÜV SÜD Product Service GmbH. "We have built a modern and efficient testing infrastructure, creating ideal conditions for the long-term growth of our capacities." In its 3,600 sqm of floor space, the new building in Garching accommodates laboratory and testing equipment as well as associated offices for over 120 staff dedicated to testing the safety, usability and quality of consumer products. The range of products extends from household products to toys, and from sports and personal protection equipment to lamps and luminaires.
So far, TÜV SÜD Product Service GmbH has operated a total of seven centres of expertise with different focal areas throughout Germany, located in Munich, Straubing, Stuttgart, Mannheim, Frankfurt, Hanover and Hamburg. "At our new location in Garching, which raises the number of our centres of expertise in Germany to eight, we will focus especially on the testing of household products, multimedia equipment, lights and luminaires, gardening tools, bicycles and pedelecs, toys and sports equipment", says Dr Butenandt. "A special feature at this location is our 'usability tests' which, together with conventional safety testing, represent the main area of demand for our clients in Germany."
